In a lot of ways, October seems to be kind of an in between month throughout our society. Even in our Church, we are deep in the thick of Ordinary Time, and our big celebrations don’t begin until next month, with All Saints and All Souls day, and Thanksgiving, and getting into Advent and our new Liturgical year. Sometimes, perhaps we even feel like this time of year is a bit of a slog to get through to our big celebrations in the coming months.
This makes October a perfect time to reflect on the ordinary ways in which we live out holiness. Prayer, generosity, and fervor in our spiritual lives is especially important during these times when we don’t have great Liturgical celebrations to fuel our devotion. We simply move forward, committing to our daily prayer, resolving to continue growing in virtue, and walking forward on the path to sainthood. It might not be the prettiest drive, but the end of the drive comes with the most beautiful view imaginable, the perfect radiance of God’s divine presence.
Let’s continue to move forward, never tiring of the spiritual life, so that we can respond more generously to God’s call in our life to know, love, and serve him.
